JOHANNESBURG  – BELEAGURED state-owned enterprises Eskom and Transnet have suffered a fresh blow after Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) suspended their membership.
BLSA said the suspension came after engagement with the two enterprises in connection with extensive allegations of corrupt behaviour.
“South Africans have been rightly disturbed in recent times at the numerous allegations of corrupt behaviour and colossal failures of corporate governance and accountability at both Eskom and Transnet,” Bonang Mohale, BLSA Chief Executive Officer, said.
Mohale said neither of the enterprises appreciated the seriousness of the issues at hand, or had the commitment to “put their houses in order.”
“This left BLSA with no choice but to suspend their memberships from the organisation. We have to live by our values and will take a zero-tolerance approach to any organisation found in breach.”
BLSA repeats its earlier appeal that government should set up the judicial investigation into the so-called state capture, as recommended by then-Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.
“Any employees found to have been in breach of the law should be prosecuted,” the organisation stated.
BLSA is an independent association whose members include the leaders of some of South Africa’s biggest and most well-known organisations.
