PRETORIA – RELATIONS between South Africa and the United States of America (USA) are facing a stiff test with Africa’s most advanced economy set to summon the US’ top diplomat in the wake of alleged offensive comments by President Donald Trump.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed the move after Trump was quoted as saying African countries, alongside Haiti and El Savador, constituted “shitholes” from where migrants into the US were undesirable.

Clayson Monyela, denounced the utterances by the controversial politician as “disturbing.”

He said South Africa aligned itself with the statements issued by the African Union (AU) and the Africa group of Ambassadors to the United Nations in New York.

“Africa is united in its affirmation of the dignity of the people of Africa and the African diaspora,” Monyela said.

Trump’s tweeted on Friday denying that he made the offensive statement but DIRCO rejected this as Trump referred to Haiti and did not address the entirety of the statement attributed to him.

Monyela said relations between South Africa and the US, and between the rest of Africa and the US, must be based on mutual respect and understanding.
