Botswana banks on Huawei to drive digital transformation

GABORONE – BOTSWANA is enhancing cooperation with international technology firms to promote socio-economic growth and achieve sustainable development through digital transformation, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said.

He spoke on his state visit to China where he toured the Huawei Research and Development (R&D) Centre in Beijing and met Yi Xiang, Senior Vice-President of Huawei Technologies.

Masisi said the Southern African country aimed to improve governance efficiency, socio-economic development and sustainable development through leverage of ICT as well as demonstrate successful cases and experience to the whole world.

“Therefore, it is natural for Botswana to select Huawei,” the president said.

“We look forward to having more exchanges and interactions with Huawei,” Masisi said.

Xiang said Botswana was one of the fastest growing economies in Africa and for many years, Huawei had taken active part in Botswana ICT planning and development, built wonderful relationships with local operators and enterprises, so as to support building ubiquitos connectivity and ICT sector.

He said Huawei would continue supporting Botswana’s national development goals improving telecommunications infrastructure.

“On this basis, Huawei will leverage its global resources, experience, and experts to provide competitive, innovative and suitable ICT applications and services and bring digital into every person, home, and organisation in Botswana,” Xiang pledged.

Huawei entered the Botswana market in 1998.

The government has awarded the company for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

After the meeting in Beijing, Huawei unveiled the Seeds for the Future Programme.

The scheme will help train a number of ICT talents for the country in the coming days.
