JOHANNESBURG – IN major boost to mobile clients using Honor handsets, the company has announced that Google and affiliated programmes would continue to operate on its devices.

The announcement follows the recent lift of the United States ban.

Raymond Liu, Head of Honor South Africa articulated the company’s position as a long-standing Android partner.

“As a company, we have made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world,” Liu explained.

“As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.”

Following the announcement, Honor devices will continue running Google’s Android OS, while users will be able to continue using Google services such as Google Play and Gmail along with required updates.

“We as the HONOR brand will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally,” Liu said.

Honor recently launched its latest flagship, the Honor 20 Pro.

In China, a record high of 1 million devices of the Honor 20 series has been sold in two weeks of launch.

Honor recently entered the South African market.

Liu said Honor had elevated its position in the South African market since inception and is on track to claim the number four position in the smartphone segment in which it operates.

“Although the tough external environment brought us some challenges, we managed the business continuity, and we will bring more products to the market soon, including high-end and budget-friendly phones,” he added.

Honor is a brand owned by Huawei Technologies, a company the US recently slapped with restrictions as part of a trade spat with China.

This week, it was reported US companies could reportedly be allowed to restart sales of equipment and services to Huawei soon, as the US begins to ease restrictions on the Chinese vendor.
