– THE Western Cape spent around R 500 000 in the last financial year to ensure a successful initiation season.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport confirmed the figures.

The money was spent on the consultations with over 200 traditional leaders during the period under review.

“The consultations took place to ensure that initiation practice was done in a way that is safe while preserving this practice,” said Ricardo Mackenzie, Democratic Alliance Western Cape Spokesperson on Cultural Affairs and Sport.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape has welcomed the successful conclusion of the initiation season.

The season passed without harm to initiates, according to the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport 2014/15 Annual Report.
