ceebration-2_resized-WITS-560x230JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – BIDVEST Wits have made their intentions of winning a first league title known by regaining their place at the top of the Absa Premiership.

The Johannesburg-based side was once more impressive this past weekend with a convincing 3-1 away victory over Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Wits’ victory propelled them to the top with 29 points from 13 games played while second placed Mamelodi Sundowns have 27 points, tied with surprise challengers Mpumalanga Black Aces, who are third courtesy of an inferior goal difference.

Prior to the weekend’s encounter, Sundowns were leading the pack. However, a goalless draw with defending champions Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Soweto has seen them drop behind the Clever Boys.

Aces meanwhile continued their impressive run with 1-0 victory over visiting Polokwane City at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Zambian international, Collins Mbesuma, scored the only goal of the day from the penalty spot kick.

Elsewhere, on Sunday, SuperSport United drew a 2 – 2 against Maritzburg United in a see-saw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Jomo Cosmos’ relegation woes mounted after they lost 1-0 to fellow strugglers University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium.

Struggling Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, saw their travails continue after a 1-1 draw by visiting Platinum Stars at Orlando Stadium.

Besieged Free State Stars suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at the hands of visiting Golden Arrows at Goble Park.

On Friday, Ajax Cape Town needed a stoppage time penalty rescue a point against visiting Bloemfontein Celtic at the Cape Town Stadium. The match finished 2-2.
