police attackDURBAN, (CAJ News) – KWAZULU-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said police officers would open fire at criminals that attempted to attack the law enforcers.

This follows the fatal shooting of an alleged carjacker for lunging at a police official.

The police official sustained a stab wound to the stomach and was taken to hospital for medical attention following said attack by the late suspect who was in his 20s.

It is alleged the complainant was driving a white Toyota Hilux along Scorpio place, Mariannridge, on Thursday when he was approached by an unknown suspect who wanted to hire the vehicle.

The suspect threatened the victim with a knife and fled the scene with the vehicle.

A case of carjacking was opened for investigation at Marianhill police.
The members spotted the vehicle in the area and gave chase.

The suspect brought the alleged stolen vehicle to a standstill and the members approached him before he resisted arrest.

He is said to have produced a knife and lunged at the member.

Ngobeni praised the officers for their reaction.

“We again warn the criminals that the police will overcome any resistance to effect arrests and will not hesitate to decisively defend themselves when attacked in the execution of their duties.” stated Ngobeni.
