Massive Zimbabwe demonstrations against President Robert Mugabe

HARARE – AN estimated 10,000 Zimbabwean took to the streets of capital city Harare protesting President Robert Mugabe’s economic misrule as well as the disappearance without trace of a whopping $15 billion (about R225 billion).

The demonstrators, led by main opposition party leader of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Morgan Tsvangirai was described as the most peaceful march.

However, the message on placards carried by protesting crowd expressed deep concern about the continued economic meltdown, disappearance of journalist-cum-activist Itai Dzamara, disappearance of $15 billion diamond money without trace from state treasury, worsening unemployment, and ramp corruption by government ministers drove the marchers to protest in unity.

Even the usual docile Apostolic church followers of Marange were seen dressed in their church regalia protesting Mugabe’s overstay in power coupled with corruption, torture, murder of opposition activists among other messages written on their placards.

Later on, MDC leader Tsvangirai addressed the protesters before demanding Mugabe to step down.

“We are here to tell Mugabe and his regime that you have failed. Mugabe has no solution to the crisis,” said Tsvangirai.

Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe from Britain in 1980 and he is still clinging on to power despite the age of 92, a move that has angered millions of Zimbabweans, majority of them now refugees out of the country.
