SOWETO– AS part of the 40th commemoration of the June 16 1976 student uprising, the Soweto Local Football Association (SFA) will on Wednesday
launch leagues named after football legends from the townships.

At an event scheduled for the Nike Training Centre, the league will honour stars of yesteryear, who made an everlasting impact in the game.

“We felt it appropriate to pay tribute to the football legends who originate from Soweto – and to honour them while they are still alive. These legends have paved the way by sacrificing so much to ensure that aspiring and current football players enjoy the opportunities at their disposal today,” says Phil Mogodi, Chairman of the SFA.

“The legends are a vital source of knowledge and know-how and they should be incorporated in our structures for continual of improvement of the
game. The Soweto Local Football Association is in the forefront of football development and will ensure that past and present players are never forgotten.”

Former players like Marks Maponyane, Johannes Khomane, Johannes “Mofokeng and many more, will have leagues in the SFA named after them.
