JOHANNESBURG – MTN and the Communications Workers Union (CWU) have signed a new salary agreement that paves the way for more stability at the workplace.

This follows months of protracted negotiations.

The signing of this agreement with the South African union comes in the backdrop of a recognition agreement that both parties signed last year.

Mteto Nyati, MTN SA Chief Executive Officer, says MTN is pleased and satisfied that it has reached an agreement with the CWU on many issues including minimum wage and pay for performance.

“The signing of this agreement is a clear sign that a strong and stable MTN is in the interest of both parties.”

He says the agreement is underpinned by the importance of safeguarding the welfare of MTN employees, Nyati said.

MTN is going through some challenges, with the wage deadlock coming months after the company was fined heavily for failure to de-register millions of subscribers in Nigeria, the company’s biggest market.
