Egypt confirmed Mandela Challenge opponents

JOHANNESBURG – SOUTH Africa and Egypt will contest this year’s Nelson Mandela Challenge at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on next month.

Bafana Bafana and The Pharaohs, as the sides are also known respectively, will resume their rivalry in the 22nd edition of the tournament on September 6.

This will be the third time Egypt and South Africa meet in the annual tournament.

Then Africa’s top-ranked sides, they locked horns for the first time in the 5th Edition played at FNB Stadium on December 16, 1998. South Africa emerged 2-1 winners.

The two teams met again on November 15, 2006, this time on neutral ground in Brentfort, London in England.

Egypt prevailed 1-0.

The annual event is one of the ways used to continue the legacy of the late South African State President Nelson Mandela. Proceeds aid needy children.

South Africa has won the Nelson Mandela Challenge nine times and has in the past hosted the likes of Argentina, Brazil, The Netherlands, USA, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Zambia among others.

Tickets are selling for R80 throughout the stadium and can be purchased at Computicket outlets, Shoprite and Checkers stores throughout the country.
