Huawei scoops main AfricaCom awards

JOHANNESBURG – LEADING global technology solutions provider, Huawei, has pledged its support to South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP), a blueprint to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030.
With the belief that information and communications technology is a vital enabler for economic growth, the company will participate in the annual Vision 2030 Summit set for Johannebsurg next week.
Over 40 speakers and 300 delegates will participate in the largest private/public meet-up, to drive economic acceleration and transformation.
The theme for this year’s Vision 2030 is, “Our Future, Our Plan–Demonstrating Commitment.”
“Huawei South Africa supports the NDP which seeks to end poverty and inequality through improving the lives of the poor and marginalised in society” said Chief Executive Oofficer, Steven Wu.
As a key participant in the Vision 2030 Summit, Huawei aims to engage stakeholders on how bridging the digital divide could contribute to national economic growth.
Huawei will share its global experience and expertise in technologies like Cloud, Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), and how this presents South Africa with opportunities to develop vertical industries in fields like Education, Health, Public Safety and e-Commerce.
According to Huawei’s Global Connectivity Index, which reflects the progress of 50 countries in terms of digital transformation, South Africa was ranked in 31st position. It showed that South Africa has performed at average levels in terms of broadband, data centers and cloud services. However, its Fibre to the Home and fixed broadband fell severely behind.
Wu said Huawei believed ICT should be a national priority strategy, with more investment and a supportive policy framework for ICT development.
“We’d also like to see more swift progress in significant projects like SA Connect and Safe Cities,” he said.
