JOHANNESBURG– THE executive mayor of West Rand District Municipality (WRDM), Mpho Nawa, said his administration made significant strides in job creation, education and health provision as well as enhancing safety since election in 2011.

He highlighted the achievements district address (SODA) at Mount Usamba, west of Johannesburg on Friday.

Nawa highlights during the financial years 2011 to 2016, 161 012 jobs have been created through different programmes across the district.

“In addition, WRDM has been proactive in creating 46 internships with funding from various sources,” he said.

On health and social development, Nawa said specialist teams have been appointed to support all clinics, focusing on Mother and Child services while school health teams have been increased from four professional nurses to ten per team.

“West Rand’s Regional Hospital, Leratong, has upgraded the casualty facility to the state of the art with modern equipment through partnerships with the private sector. A new pharmacy, mammogram unit and two additional dialysis machines have improved the service.”

In terms of public safety, he mentioned the department at the WRDM is composed of community safety, disaster management and emergency services.

“Community safety focuses on improved law enforcement, improved rural and informal settlement safety, reduction in women and child abuse, safety in public places, improved inter-agency co-operation, improved social engineering and encouraging community participation.”

Nawa said support of the education sector has featured largely on the programme of the WRDM.

The mayor’s office has consistently promoted projects such as Back to School visits, matric awards gala dinner, support for poorest performing schools and support for school management teams.

Registration fees for further study have been paid to over 120 matriculants over the years.

“We were proud to announce that the West Rand District achieved the best results in the whole of South Africa in the matric exams of 2014 and second best results in 2015,” Nawa said.
