JOHANNESBURG -AS Women’s Month ends this week we at Gauteng Guardian asked 33 year old professional Busisiwe Makhaya a , who works at 24 Hr Printing, in Bramley, Johannesburg what this month means for her.
“It means freedom for me freedom for us all as women, looking back in the olden days where women
were classified as persons who belong to the kitchen, taking care of husbands and kids. That has changed. Women’s day is a very important day for all the women, our grandmothers and mothers
fought for women’s freedom not to be classified as a domestic character. If you look at now we ladies
are able to stand in boardroom full of men and address a crowed of men with confidence without
fear of being judged and intimated. The confidence was retained when women marched to union
buildings on the 9th of August 1956.Wathinta abafazi wathinta Imbokodo
On her dreams: “Hmmmm! My dream would be to open up my own wedding fashion line, meaning to
have my runway of wedding line and sell wedding as bride’s maid’s dresses everything original and
meaning designed, manufactured in South Africa so we can boost our economy, on that note still
working on my dream ,Dreams never expire just have to work hard. Platforms and opportunities are laid out for women. I just need to work harder.
One her expectations from the government as a young woman : “ The government should empower
young gals and women at a young to dream about having their own Businesses a have a solid careers
and discourage them from having kids at a young age. They must empower themselves and not to
depend on men, still on that .there would be less women being abused and afraid to come out because
of finance issues. If you look at most young women depend on social grants and that is definitely a
Big NO.
On challenges facing women today: “There is still more to be done in our country some women are
consider themselves inferior to men. That is what makes them vulnerable for men to use them easily if
we all learn stand together as women and not try to look good while undermining and looking down
other women we could do and achieve so much more to improve our lives and for young growing gals
who look up to us. We are women we are the seed of life we gave birth to men not the other way
round, we can still restore our dignity as we come together and unite, love and support each other.”
