JOHANNESBURG – JUDGE Thokozile Masipa has dismissed the state’s application for leave to appeal Oscar Pistorius’ six-year murder sentence
with costs.
In her ruling on Friday at the South Gauteng High Court Masipa said, “I’ve considered all the arguments for and against.”
She suggested if the state would want to pursue the appeal could approach the court directly on a petition.
Earlier, state prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued that Masipa’s July 2016 six-year sentence of Pistorius for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva
Steenkamp was too lenient.
“The court’s starting point should be the minimum sentence of 15 years,” and the six years handed down is “shockingly lenient,” said Nel.
